A self-taught illustrator, I specialize in graphic novel and manga style character design, flat avatars, children's book illustration, and minimalist illustration for motion design.
Concept Sketches:
My sketches take inspiration from my life experiences, people I have met or observed, and cartoons, anime, and manga. I start with establishing a personality, character story arc, or specific motivation - then I design around that concept.
My AUDIOPHILES graphic novel concept begins with the friendship between Mariposa "Mari" Reyes and Ruby Jeong. My creative process involves establishing physical attributes, creating facial expressions, and trying on different clothing and hairstyles for the characters that convey important details about the characters and their stories.
Final Sketch with Ink:
I try this with all of the characters and fine-tune details until they create a cohesive picture that makes them look like they belong together. The instruments show that these characters are musicians in a band together.
I made a large, high quality sketch and finalized the illustration with a couple different weights of pigment liner to give the drawing a polished, stylized look.
Vector Illustration:
I then added color, highlights, and shadows digitally as vector drawings in Adobe Illustrator.
Houston (travel poster, 2023):
To honor my hometown, I designed this poster to reflect the pursuit of industry and productivity that drives the heart of Houston culture. The "Be Someone" overpass is something that struck me from a young age, and I recognized this recurring theme everywhere, living in this city. People here are driven to prove themselves, to become something suitable for successful living and recognition. When I was little, I wanted to be a cartoonist. That dream was overshadowed by the pressure to use my skills in mathematics for something more viable, such as aerospace engineering. Not remarkable enough for the Texas universities I applied myself to, I returned to my original love: art and design.
Reference Photos:
Houston is recognized for NASA, industry, harvesting energy, and the large sprawling city. Houston traffic is on its own level and not for the faint of heart. Houstonian city-dwellers pride themselves in their resiliency, austerity, and vibrancy. People come to Houston with the drive to innovate and work hard. The space shuttle and oil derricks were admittedly inspired by my regular visits to the various Fry's Electronics stores, which had featured themes that reflected different areas of the city.
My First Dog (comic):
This is a one-page comic honoring the life and memories of my first dog, Antigone. Illustrated in pen, marker, and colored pencil.
Kid Power:
This is a concept for a children's book series I am designing. Loosely based on friendships I had growing up, this group of kids embody the spirit of creative collaboration and show the power that inclusivity and diversity bring into different spaces.
Each character represents a particular muse through their special interest, and they take turns leading projects with the support of their friends.
Incoming: I am designing a children's activity book with puzzles to engage different disciplines and schools of thought, featuring all eight friends and valuable lessons.
